Mbasa started singing when she was five years old together with her mother who was a sangoma. “I have great respect for my mother as she was a single woman raising two children on her own,” says Mbasa, whose full name is Nombasa Swaartbooi.

Growing up, Mbasa’s musical interest was influenced by her environment, and she loved all of the traditional songs as well as those sung at her Zionist church. She struggled to find peers who shared her love for music and joined a number of gospel groups, singing at church, weddings and various other functions.

At the age of 35, Mbasa felt that she needed to use the talents God had given her, and put pen to paper to write some of her own songs. “I went to concerts and gospel shows to showcase my talent as a solo artist. I received a lot of positive feedback and was told that my music really did have an impact on people,” says Mbasa. “The message in my compositions is all about how you can deal with bad things that happen in life.”

After six years as a solo artist, she recorded her first album. Mbasa is available to sing at various church events and other functions in the Eastern Cape.
